One Boy’s Story: The difference a clinic can make

When young Kajiimu Alvin was burned by hot tea, his grandmother, Nabulime Joyce, knew he needed medical attention. As his condition worsened, she turned to Namutamba Health Center III in Uganda—a facility her family could trust when they needed help most.
What followed was ten days of treatment and compassionate care that Joyce says made all the difference for her grandson.
Care When It Matters Most
The accident happened while Joyce was away. Alvin was getting tea from the kitchen when he knocked a ladder, causing the hot tea to spill onto him.
After seeking initial medical assistance, Joyce brought Alvin home. But by the second day, his condition had become severe, and she knew he needed more care.
“Namutamba is our only clinic, and that is the only referral center we know,” Joyce explained.
She brought Alvin to Namutamba Health Center, where the medical team began treating his burns. Because his condition was serious, he was admitted to the facility ward.
For Joyce, it was a frightening time. But she found reassurance in the people caring for her grandson. The staff treated Alvin's burns, dressed his wounds, and encouraged Joyce through the difficult experience.
“They were giving him good care, dressing him well,” she recalled.
Ten Days of Quality Treatment
Joyce heard that Alvin might need to stay at the health center for a month to recover. Instead, after just ten days of treatment, his condition had improved sufficiently, and he was discharged.
For a grandmother who had watched her grandson suffer a serious injury, the experience left a lasting impression.
Alvin also recalled aspects of his treatment, describing how he initially did not feel pain during wound dressing because of the skill and gentleness of the medical staff.
“We are so happy, we are so happy,” Joyce said with a huge smile on her face. “We are so much proud of our health center.”
Her words reflect what the clinic means to families in the community. When a child is seriously injured, having somewhere reliable to turn means everything.
